Privacy in librarian bloggs

As I perused Annoyed Librarian, Shifted Librarian and librarian.net, among others, I noticed that they are all at one year old or older. Some of them seem to have some interesting links, but most appear to be people on soap boxes venting. That is why I keep a journal. I guess that is why they blogg. Most of those particular privacy bloggs that I reviewed did not have too many other people blogging back. It almost seemed as though maybe these bloggers were doing an assignment just like I am doing now. Who cares except the reviewer or teacher of the class I am taking?! Jessamyn West of librarian.net had the most informative blogg with lots of great links to news items and feeds, but it was so dated.

Week 8: Mashups & API

This morning, over coffee, I explored MusicMesh, a Mashup of entertainment. It was like watching a music video on MTV except I got to pick which song I wanted to hear from Green Day ("Holiday") when I wanted to hear it. I also could read reviews and order the cd if I wanted to. It was fun. I also perused the fitness category and started to view a mashup about walking routes and could have chosen any area in the world to formulate my own walking route, a very nice Google Map feature if I were on vacation and wanted to plan to explore new terrain and keep my fitness routine going.

Week Seven:Podcasting & Online Hosted Video 4/21-4/27

The more I play, the more I learn. What seems complicated and difficult becomes easy. I am exploring the world of podcasting and videos on the web, something I never dreamed of doing. I bought a home computer to do work related things and update my resume, but I never thought I would create a wiki, blogg, download RSS feeds, videos and podcasts. There are wide varieties of podcasts and videos out there on the web,as you can see from the two I downloaded to my blogg. Audio and resolution of video will vary, as will the content. When one goes onto YouTube, one must be very choosy as to which video one wants view & download or share. The potentials are enormous. There are amazing lecture series and tutorials out there. Common Craft, LLC has the best tutorials for Web 2.0 technology. Many universities have great videos which inspire me to copy some of the classes I teach onto video. When I am sick and can't teach, I can substitute my video or just keep it on the library web site for anyone to use at any time. People will be using the library from any location at any time. Librarians can post videos for doctors on how to use databases, how to perform surgical procedures, to hearing/seeing the lecture they missed while in surgery. I am truly inspired. This class has made me push myself to learn about technology I never could have learned about by simply reading about it in a book. I am a visual and auditory learner and Web 2.0 technologies help me learn in a way that I wish was available to me when I was younger, but it is never to late to learn and share what I learn.

Online Photosharing:April 14-20,2008

The process of uploading photos to flicker and my blogg were easy. The process of uploading the photos from flicker to facebook were not so easy. It took me a long while to figure it out and I was only able to upload the flicker link of my photo stream to my blogg. The one hiking picture that is on the blogg all by itself was easy to upload because it was already on my shared drive at work computer. I think the process for sharing photos as the Library of Congress is doing is just great. In that particular instance, libraries using these photo tools is a great way to identify historic resources of all kinds. I would really have pull pins and needles from a hay stack to come up with ways to use these tools in my hospital library. I think, for the most part, these tools are going to be used personally, not professionally, within the field of medical librarianship. I hope my colleagues share ways to use these tools in medical libraries. I can see ways that doctors in hospitals could use these tools for immediate access to pathologies, surgeries and diagnosises.

Web Office Tools

Well, I was able to copy and paste a word document easily and manipulate the text in Google Docs. I was also able to create a spreadsheet similar to one I use at work using the same formulas and keep working on it at home and work. That was nice to be able to start a project at home and continue it at work the next day without having to carry a floppy or usb disk. Also, Google Doc is so similar to Microsoft software that it is very user friendly. The ability to work together and edit documents with colleagues at another location is great. I read all of the reviews for the different office tools and I read the class blogg to find out what other librarians thought, but I must admit, I don't want to register for one more tool that I know I won't use as long as I am using Microsoft software loaded on my computers at home and at work. Ultimately, I did not try out the other office tools. I am a bit put off by having to pay for these internet office tools, whether it is now or after a trial period.

I will say that I was inspired after reading Christopher Chase's article, Google Docs & Spreadsheets: Collaborating in the Classroom or Library. I think that using these internet office tools is the future for all software products. I am at the end of the BabyBoom and am still flexible and open to learning about new technology. The Gen X and Millenials kids are born, bread and brought up on this stuff and if it inspires them to write and do math, then so be it.

Week 4-Social Bookmarks

Well, I must say that I am amazed I actually did more than what was assigned to us in class. Not only have I bookmarked more than 5 other bookmarks, but I have uploaded my del.i.cious bookmarks to my blogg and uploaded pages from my wiki to del.i.cious. I am having fun and learning a lot and only hope that I can not only experiment with all of this new technology, but apply it and use it in Peters Library here at Rhode Island Hospital. Writing these words will help me actualize this. I hope!!
